Medical malpractice insurance is the biggest problem in health care right now. It is costing doctors hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to get it & driving many good doctors out of rural areas and/or high risk specialties. It adds to the cost of medicine, procedures, etc to cover these expenses, even if the physician never gets sued.
Fixing it would require courts making it harder to sue over a minor mistake or pain & suffering & insurance companies giving discounts for doctors that don't have to need to use the insurance.

First part of your question, the biggest problem with health care in the USA, is unregulated hospitals that accept tax dollars for funding, unregulated pharmaceutical companies that have no cap on what they can charge and doctors overcharging.

Did you know there was a study on student loans showed it takes the average person approximately 15 years to pay back a student loan while it takes a doctor less than 2 years... keep in mind he goes to school 7 years and the others 4.

Second part of your question, thte solution lies in more governmental regulation of all of #1 and universal healthcare. After all, a healthy nation is a prosperous one. There is not one person that would not benefit from universal health care... we all eventually need it. Also, we are the only industrialized nation without it.

One of the biggest problems is our overly litigious society. Doctors and hospitals have a great big target on them everytime they touch a patient, which drives up the cost of defensive medicine and malpractic insurance. We should not eliminate malpractice suits, but we should put a cap on "pain and suffering" pay-outs AND there should be penalties against plaintives filing frivilous suits.

The cost of prescription drugs which is mostly due to the salaries paid to CEO's and the vast amount of advertising. There is more spent in these areas than on research. I would ban advertising of pharmaceuticals.

People not taking preventive measures by eating right and exercising. Smoking is a biggie. I would try to give incentives for this, do not know how. But, if people know that they can benefit by taking care of themselves, they will be more apt to do it.
