Hi everyone,

I have a gag reflex and it is stopping me from eating properly. Occasionally I have problems brushing my teeth but its mostly food which i have a problem with.

I know that some people say they can control it but I am having great diffuculty doing this. I have horrid thoughts and these make me gag more, and I can't help but throw up.

Can somebody give any good tips?

i would say the best answer you going to get online is go see a professional.. i think they actually have medication for that that helps the muscles relax so that you can eat and do whatever your normally use to without having the urge to vomit

It might be worth looking into the cause of it - fearing 'loss of control' via gagging - can sometimes stem from something traumatic in the past. I was 20 before I could swallow a tablet! Took lots of practice... even know I dislike it... it is definately mental for me! Lots of deep breaths..
But in your case if it is stopping you eating and brushing your teeth then I would definately get advice from the doctor.. Also they say numbing sprays can help but I have not used them...

The way i learnt to swallow tablets (when i wanted to start takign the pill) was kinda... embarrassing but id have a small cup and a thick straw (like a maccas one) and id put the tiny pill in water and pretend im just drinking and not think about it and after a while it would go down ok... i built on from there... good luck xoxo

Hi Laura -
I think the more serious issue is that you have an eating disorder. The fact that your gag reflex is so strong that you can't eat suggests that there is something wrong psychologically. I would strongly urge you to seek professional help with this issue. First talk to your doctor and perhaps get a referral to see a psychologist who specializes in eating disorders.

i am assuming that this is not something you have had your entire life, or you would be aware as to what is wrong and how to fix it...or else you would have been seriously malnourished. In the meantime, try drinking some of your calories in order to nourish your body. Try things like carnation breakfast, slim fast, and protein shakes.

I know this may sound strange but maybe you should check out some books on giving fellatio, many discuss different ways to suppress your gag reflex.

Take small bites and chew well.

Use a smaller toothbrush.

You need to break the habit. Anticipation plays a role. Talk to your doctor.
