You need a back up disc. If your system ever crashes because of a virus or some other reason, you'll need the disc to reboot the system. If you upgrade your hard drive. Example: 40GB to a 120GB you need it to program the new hard drive. I learned the hard way. I have 3 computers and I have back up discs for all 3. It's the smart thing to do.

I think that if you have only one copy of your documents you don't care about them. There are many things that can erase or corrupt your data - viruses, disasters on computer, hardware problems, and human element after all. So I care about my data and back it up as often as I can. For backing up I'm using this scheme: I backup my important data to an external HD using Acronis True Image 10.0. Every evening True Image automatically updates images stored on external drive. It takes not much time and I know that my data is safe. In my opinion external drive + True Image is the best backup solution.
You can learn more about True Image here: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

If you get a computer virus, it is possible to lose all the data on your hard drive. If you have files you want to keep or will need for future reports, it is wise to create a backup disk.

If you have a physical hard drive crash (the hardware fails), recovery options usually cost a LOT of money to recover your data. And software can't recover data from a hardware failure. That's why it's important to make backups.
