Conservativism and liberalism didn't have the same meanings back then as they do today.

Today's idea of conservatism has moved much more into the idea of social conservatism than fiscal.

With that said, from my research (and this doesn't match historians which is a gripe of mine), the one's spitting on the soldiers at the airports as they returned, were a mixed crowd. This crowd tended to mostly be a combination of multi-party families of dead soldiers and college students.

Note: when I was in the Army in the mid-80s, I remember travelling with a few older ppl from my unit. One guy once had a flashback at an airport. He was a warrant officer and we had to go sit down. He started to talk about ppl spitting on him and throwing tomatoes at him in the airport when he came home from Vietnam. His number one shock was that he said .. was the shock of it. They truly believed they would be met with honor and pride... only to be met with such animosity.

When I returned, no one spit on me or called me a baby killer. The only people who ever put me down were the World War II vets who liked telling me that Viet Nam wasn't a "real" war & I wasn't a "real" vet like those that served in "the big one" were. So, I'd have to say that the conservatives were the only ones who showed me any disrespect.

I would have to say it was the conservatives for sending them off to an unjust war, and then cutting all their benefits when they returned home. That was spitting on them where it really counts. The Conservatives lied to them about what they were fighting for, dropped Agent Orange on them in battle, and then broke their solemn contract about taking care of them when they got back by such things as cutting benefits for them and their families, underfunding the VA system so it is a skeleton of its former self, and fighting the GI Bill for promised educational benefits. Now as they retire, the onslaught continues with the plundering of their Old Soldier Homes and the care they receive in them.

This is in the category of an Urban Legend. The story of returning soldiers being spat on called babykillers has been repeated and repeated and repeated ad infinitum that it's led to the impression that it was a common occurrence. It happened once, maybe twice. Not enough to establish a pattern.

Let me ask you, which ideology realized that the Vietnam War was unwinnable, adn wanted to save these soldiers lives rather than piss them away in a futile effort? Hmm?

Were conservatives slave owners? How far do you want to go back to show that the other side is soooo evil?

We won. You lost. Deal.
