"YES"! There is a bit of uneasiness that comes from parenting a young child. this is natural!
very young children Will do this for attention, and after a time it will escalate to other things.
here is how you can check you child and stop the games at the same time.
Position the child's bed so you can look in "WITHOUT" being seen by the child. This way you can rest easy and your child hasn't seen you looking in. an other way of course is to install a video camera and look at the monitor! This can be done with a camera for your computer and located in your child's bed room.

In my house we go by the 10 minute rule. My daughter is now a toddler but we started it as soon as she was born. When she wakes up at night and cries we give her 10 minutes. Usually she settles down and goes back to sleep within the first 5-7 minutes at longest. If she keeps fussing to the 7-10 minute mark we go in and pick her up and try to figure out what's wrong. It keeps us from being up all night and it teaches her to sleep without help from us.

By actually getting up and checking on her, you're disturbing both your and her sleeping. She might be just turning, or sleeping, your movement next to her might wake her up, or make it harder for her to get back to sleep (not to mention you getting back to sleep).
I usually go to check on my baby only if she actually cries, and when she does, I comfort her while she is her crib, if she wouldn't calm down, then I give her a sip of water and sing a bit to her or hold her. Now I have a 6-hour sleep night!
Just make sure that she's full, dry, and not too cold or too warm.

I have a nephew that I babysit all the time and when he wakes up he just sits in his cot until he gets hungry and that is when I go and get him out. Dose you baby cry as soon as she wakes up? I don't think you do only if she has been crying for more than 10 minutes?

...well no but just a quick check in the cot or wherever to check everything is OK would do...try not to talk to her or make eye contact, then when she gets used to that don't let her see that your checking on her. Its instinct to check that their OK though isn't...you would never forgive yourself if she really needed you.
