The United States of America helps support almost every other government on the world. If we stopped providing monetary and military support the world would fall into anarchy within a very short time.

Protectionism and isolationism are the bad side, also thinking that if we give all countries enough food and money they will be our friends. We don't need or want to control what the rest of the world does, that's why we encouraged the establishment of the UN, with teh hope things could be peacefully be worked out simply by peer pressure, without use of force. Sadly everyone is always trying to cut their own deal and Americans are wishing they could just build a wall around the country and tell those countries that want to make trouble where to go. But it's not possible, if we ignore them they seek us out for confrontation as North Korea, Iran, Syria and others are trying to do. We have the military capability to wipe them off the face of the earth, but we don't have the desire to inflict harm on civilian populations for the actions of the screwballs running their country. Perhaps the USA just has too much optmism that given a chance people in any nation would work together for a better future, as the situation in Iraq makes us question if they are civilized or still living in the dark ages.

Even though Europeans and Americans are presumed to share many values and views, the Europeans do not approve of the way the current American political administration is handling international policies.
Many Europeans express concern that current trends in the US could lead in the future to a re-definition of the partnership between the two entities. The alliance could change from one that is of primary importance to one that is less significant.


US Intelligence fears Iraq civil war by 2005

According to a US intelligence report, the difficult situation in Iraq recently outlined by UN Secretary Kofi Annan could lead to a civil war in that country. Despite this information, the Bush administration continues to say that the situation in Iraq is under control.
