I did two:
- under what colour of light do plants grow best?
- what kind of ice melts slowest? (with sugar, salt, vinegar, carbonated water, etc.)

It depends, but in my personal point of view, some thing that is affecting your local community, is a good topic for science project.
Lets say garbage is a problem in town, start looking for recycling systems and waste management systems.
If water is the issue, go that way.
You will find some problem at your community.
If you live in a big city with a big structure to support the community, then you need to look for a future problem that the city may have, or an abstract project, like space investigation.
This is if you want to have a high impact impression, there is a lot of things that you may use as a project.
Just be clear and objective, do not try to fix all the problems with one magical solution.
If you focus on local problems, every body will sense that you care.
Well that is my opinion.
Hope is help full.

I did absolutely the most cool science fair project on earth.
Here it is. I had 3..100 gallon cold water tanks. I made a enclosed area with plants and the tanks lits up with black lights. We had music pumped into the tanks and monitored the reaction on the fish with different kinds of music. we had a a stage set up for observations and recorded a log of the fish reactions and the poeples reactions. We recorded fish growth over several months when subjected to music selections in each tanks. Growth patterns and everything. I won my science fair and I tied this in with my senior project.

you can try what i did? i did a project where i grew mold on fruit and saw how it affected the acidic level in them (you would have to be able to get a hold of pH strips and test the pH levels) you could use other foods too i suppose, i only did 3 fruits but you could use twenty it worked for me =] Good Luck!
