First of all try talking to other women in your area or work place they might have some good or bad references. When you go you should see how she or he treats you. Is he/she really interested in your condition, is the exam he/she performs thorough (ckecking everything including blood pressure, brests, vagina etc). Does he/she make you comfortable trust you feelings. Best is try to check out on him/her if you can.

I would talk to your friends & get a recommendation.
Usually women seek out gynecologist for problems their MD can't handle.

If you're uncomfortable with a guy gyno, go for a girl.
And choose someone young, you don't want an old guy with glasses that can barely see looking in there and maybe missing or adding something.

I am not sure why you need a GYN. Your regular doctor can handle your medical needs and routine pap smears. You need to post what special problem you are having that has you needing to see a GYN for better responses.

Everyone builds it up to be a big ordeal but its really not...as long as you are comfortable with your body, its nothing. Don't worry about it--these people are professionals and deal with this everday.
