My friend can carry on converations in English, Japanese, Chinese, French, or Farsi (Persian). This is one example of linguistic intelligence. Other friends of mine speak only English, but they express themselves very well and have large vocabularies. This is another form of linguistic intelligence. Someone with a high linguistic intelligence communicates well, particularly in reading and writing, but also through speaking.

Linguistic intelligence and logical/mathematical are the two kinds of intelligence modern education concentrates on most. Standardized tests that have a verbal component (like the SAT, ACT, GRE...) are testing some aspects of linguistic intelligence. The state assessments required under No Child Left Behind tend to test linguistic intelligence rather heavily.

Evaluations for Special Education eligibility in the US generally test seven specific academic areas to determine whether a student has a learning disability. Five of those are directly related to linguistic intelligence: basic reading, reading comprehension, written expression, listening comprehension, and oral expression (the other two areas involve math).

Linguistic intelligence is the ability to use language to excite, please, convince, stimulate or convey information.

Linguistic Intelligence involves not only ease in producing language, but also sensitivity to the nuances, order and rhythm of words.
