Movies like Babe and Charlottes's Web seem to hint that maybe they're some of the smartest animals in the barn. I've heard that pigs can sense when they're about to be slaughtered.

Yes, they are. At least as intelligent as dogs. I had a pet pig when I was a child and she was very smart. I have seen reports of pigs that have been trained to really impressive things- like play piano, but who is to say that trainability equals intelligence. As far as possessing the ability to sense when they are about to be slaughtered- I am not sure about that one. But I can't imagine that when one of them sees a big goony redneck standing over them with a shotgun that they aren't at least concerned.

They are said to be smarter than dogs.

They make excellent pets - so I've heard, although I don't have one myself. (George Clooney does, though!)

I read this wonderful story once of a potbellied pig whose owner passed out in the kitchen and it actually got out of the house, out of the front gate and laid down in the middle of the road - in order for someone to stop!!!

Someone DID stop, followed the pig into the house (the person said the pig seemed very insistent) and found the woman.

(She was saved. Yippee!!)

Yes, pigs can sense when they are about to be slaughtered, as can cows.

This is one of the many reasons why I am a vegetarian.

Pigs are extremely smart. They can learn tricks so easily that some say they are better than dogs.
