Often the best selling albums aren't the ones people still talk about much later. For example: Boyz II Men.

I think these artists WILL stand the test of time
Radiohead
Beck
Pavement
Nirvana
U2
Tupac
Jeff Buckley

I think these artists moved a lot of copies, but WILL NOT stand the test.
Mariah Carey
Boyz II Men
Lenny Kravitz
Alanis Morrisette
Backstreet Boys

Who will last? Who won't, despite selling a lot of copies? Who's on the line?

Of the groups/acts who have emerged from that decade, very few will be listened to in 30 to 40 years time. Possible exceptions maybe:-

Nirvana
Radiohead
Eminem
Outkast
Manic Street Preachers
Oasis
Massive Attack
Jeff Buckley
Beck
Portishead
Belle & Sebastian

All of the above have released at least one 'classic album' that may still sell and be popular in the decades to come.

Amongst the acts from the 90's that will probably be forgotten are some who have become unfashionable within no time at all:-

Space
Cast
Catatonia
Ocean Colour Scene
The Stereophonics
Black Grape

On the contrary Lenny Kravitz is not a new kid on the block and has been around much longer than you think and quite frankly somone with his talent never fades however I agree that the backstreet boys for example were just a passing fad. As for tupac It is a pitty that someone is more recognised in death than life but isn't that the way it goes. As is the same for Kurt Kobain. and many other artists who have passed. I ask you this would they still be a conversation piece if they were still with us (god bless their souls)? Or would they be like most artists of the 80's "whatever happened to"
