Football & soccer are played on two possible surfaces (grass, astroturf). Baseball has two different surfaces in every game (grass or turf AND dirt). Golf (which I consider a game, not sport) has grass and sand.
I would guess that the surface differences for tennis are based on what was available when the sport first became popular in that region. Perhaps it was cheaper to trim grass down than keep a harder surface available. Same with clay.

Never really thought about it before, it is actually a good question. It most likely started because people just hung nets wherever they could. Thinking about it now I defiantly like it. Obviously it gives all different types of players an chance to win, especially on Red Clay and Grass.
