Because
the more people
that have phone numbers
the more unique numbers
you will need to cover all of them.

The reason is simple.
Due to the high demand for phones.
Before everyone had phones... they just had the simple seven digit number.
However, more and more people wanted and bought phones.
Well eventually... they ran out of numbers to give to people.
I know what your saying.. 111-111 to 999-999 is ALOT of numbers.
But half of those numbers cant be used. For example: you cant begin any phone number with 911 because you would go straight to the police. And cities with 311 as a city help line (like chicago) you cant use any numbers beginning with 311 for that reason.

So in order to give more numbers Area Codes were installed
So now the same number might be in 2 seperate cities of the same state, or two diffrent states.

312-744-1752 CHICAGO- south
773-774-1752 Chicago -north
630-774-1752 - Wisconsin
Hope this helps :)

If he's in 8th grade then he's only like 2 years older right? I don't really see a problem there, and maybe you could ask for a phone again...just make sure you promise not to talk sooo much. And besides, must ppl txt now anyway, and some carriers have unlimited txting...

To state it simply, there would not be enough numbers available for all of the telephones in the world with only seven digits in a telephone number. Area Codes increase the number of numbers available by a thousand times over seven digit numbers.

So they will be different. You wouldn't want to share a line with someone... Ever see an I Love Lucy or other 50's television show? Hehe.. It was common to share a line with someone during that time in the United States.
