Ice can help some, and using a sharp instrument obviously.
Personally I would recommend having it done professionally, less painful, lower risk of infection.
Remember to use disinfectant on both the object you are using to pierce with, as well as the object you wish inserted. And to thoroughly clean the area with disinfectant before performing the piercing.
Professional remains the way to go - known to many people who got infections and had to take the piercing out, go to doctor, get antibiotics, etc - then go through it all again.

Okay, here's the skinny. I got my lip pierced on the left side in the beginning of March. Do NOT pierce it with a hoop. It WILL get swollen and it's just unneccessary pain. Pierce it with a stud. Mine pussed (which most do) but if you take care of it, washing with soap and water constantly (or using the salt water spray H20 OCEAN) really works too on healing quicker. If you want to put a hoop after which is what I did (I waited about 3 months just in case) go get a hoop fitted to your lip at a Tattoo Parlor. Good luck!!

Less painful during the piercing? I would go into meditation mode- slow your breathing, take slow deep breaths; have something in your hand to take your mind off the piercing ( even your key chain, and concentrate slowly on each key ), don't let your mind wonder from your breathing and the keys. RELAX concentrate on relaxing your tense muscles, feel how tense you are holding yourself and release that tension. Good Luck !

You can ask them to put some stuff on your lip which turns it numb and close your eyes and think about how cool your new peircing is going to be or that the guy you like is touching your lip just dont think about it going through your skin--- although i would not recomand you getting one

Don't do it. There was a story of a girl who had her lips pierced on Los Angeles Times. She had a permanent headache along with other physical sickness. After a long ordeal, she had it removed with other undesirable consequences.

I used ice, oragel and a very large safety pin. I was in high school and I was dumb. It got infected. It hurt. It took a long time. I still have a little scar. Make sure this is what you want!

It'll be damn sexy. Go to a good physician, a local anesthesia is given before piercing & some pain killer after that. Be carefull of infection.

Are you serious? Do you want to be a 60 year old grandfather, explaining why you have a ring in your lip? Express yourself some other way. The most non-painful way is not to do it! Please reconsider it. You will be glad you did.

yes - take a few ibuprofen about 15 minutes before you get it done and use a bit of ambesol right before its done and keep it handy and use it til the *bad* part of the pain goes away - which is almost 12 hours - but the ambesol works wonders : )
