I was watching a National Geographic program about skin and how it fuunctions as an organ na dthan the program talked about skin color and how it has affected humans. The film interview several African people from Kenya and South Africa about how light skin is preferred among the mn in Africa. The coutnry has so many racsit and self-hating ads and they often show the lighter women being more appealing. sucessful, and popular. Why does racism like this still exsist? I often see this in many tv shows and movies geared towards blacks wear the lighter woman is more desired.

It is an age old problem. Part of it has to do with the European influence from colonization. Also, part of it has to do with just our cultural ideals that are not always realistic. Just as many Africans want to be lighter skinned, white people want to be darker (thus, tanning). People of all races have thousands upon thousands of years of ever-changing ideals which leaves everyone who doesn't live up to the ideals feeling bad about themselves. Somewhere along the lines someone decided that light skin was better just as it was decided men are superior to women, for example. It is false, and it is changing, but it is still with us all over the world, sadly. Like you I wish we could just appreciate beauty in all its colors.

You can choose to think of it as racism, if you wish. But it is not.

Think about it this way - for years female models and stars have often been so thin as to appear skeletal, and this has been labelled as 'good' and 'attractive'. Does this mean society is being racist against fat people? Hardly.

Some of these things just reflect a prevailing taste. Many men DO prefer blond, skinny, pale-skinned women. But this is hardly set in stone. One need only look at some of the fads of the past to see that this is so.

Not too long ago, for example, an hourglass figure was seen as desirable. Women would go so far as to have parts of their ribcage surgically removed so they could get closer to this ideal.

Go back a few centuries and it's not too hard to find evidence that a more weighty woman was seen as the preferred state. And so on and so on.

You can call it 'self-hating' if you like, but then it goes both ways. Is it self-hating when white women are attracted to black men? Don't get so caught up with what advertisters and society try to say you SHOULD like, and just worry about what you really like yourself!

Everyone's different. Enjoy it! ( :

Queen, YOU MISUNDERSTOOD that National Geographic documentary, if you were not a naive viewer, you would've get the point, the main idea of the program was to target viewers like you and LIE TO. Just like any other White made documentary always disgraces Africa and the Black people in general. Why would a Black man wanted to be a different color?. In Africa, people are more culturally, and racially very proud of themselves. It is ALWAYS programs like the National Geographic, and the Discovery Channel series that misinform MILLIONS of viewers worldwide. They misinform and lie to you, because they want to portray the Black race as if they wished to be White, making the White race look superior, another psychological warfare with Africans.

Yes, definitely we are a light-skinned society. More so for people who are dark-skinned. They are always talking about skin color, "redbone" and other slang terms for skin color. It is our world. It may change someday, but not now.
