Are ther any distortion pedals that allow you switch between light distortion, medium distortion, heavy distortion, and clean? If not how would I need to set up my gear to accomplish this? I'm all about the loud/soft dynamics.

If you have an amp with a clean channel and an overdrive channel, you could use a footswitch to change between them. Set the gain to medium overdrive. Add a distortion pedal, set for light distortion, and you have 4 options.
Bypass/clean channel -- clean
distortion/clean channel -- light distortion
Bypass/overdrive -- medium distortion
distortion/overdrive-- metal madness!
This saves fiddling with changing the settings on a pedal mid gig.

Get yourself an Ibanex tube screamer. The older models are sought after and much better, but the newer ones are good as well. You'll have to expirement with your settings, but this pedal will give you whatever you want from gentle overdrive to head banging.
