Hi!
I'm 13 and have had periods long enough to know this stuff.
Well, for one thing, before your first period you might get PMS, or premenstrual syndrome, where you are super moody and sometimes even weep for no apparent reason, or lash out at people who don't deserve it. You will have had whitish discharge for 6 months to a year before your first period, and your breasts will have already started to develop, and pubic hair will have already started to grow.
To prepare for your period, you should buy tampons and pads. You may also buy pantyliner for hygienic purposes(to be more clean), to absorb the whitish discharge. I usually wear these right before periods, but if the discharge comes out during other times of the month, that's okay too. (But, if your discharge has a strong, yucky smell, or if it is a color other than white, go to the doctor.) Some girls wear pantyliner every day when they're not on their period, just in case their period comes along unexpectedly. :-)
Some girls choose to wear tampons during the day and pads at night. If you choose to wear only pads, don't feel self-conscious if you think they are bulky because they're not. Just make sure you change your pads/tampons at least every 4 or 5 hours.
With tampons, if you do not do that, you may get toxic shock syndrome. With pads, you do this simply because it's icky to not do so.You can get instructions on how to insert tampons and how to put on pads from the manufacturer's box, or your mom.
Periods may seem unfair and a drag, but they are a fact of life and we women must all live with it and make the best of it.
Good luck and welcome to puberty!

Well, I just started getting my period less than a year ago. For me, I remember getting a few stomach aches here and there within the month before I got it. Also, from a month to a year before you get it, you'll start seeing a whitish yellowish discharge in your underwear (I would start wearing a panty liner when that happens). Lastly, ask your mom when she got it. Even though mine got hers A LOT later then when I got mine, for most people, it happens around the time their moms gets theirs. If it seems your period is close, I would start carrying a few pads or panty liners with you just to be safe.
Hope this helped:)

when you first get your period it's usually like a dark dark red/ brown. by your second period it will lighten up to an actual red blood color. but the day you start to see brown in your undies put in a pad and if it continues throughout the day it's your period. you will get cramps, headache maybe, and might be really tired and lazy.
make sure you talk to your mom or any female family members about it so they can help you out!(:

While each girls vary in the ages they are when periods and other signs of puberty occur, the order and approximate time between them is fairly consistent. The two things that are most closely tied to the age when a girl starts her periods, that she can readily assess herself are: first real bra and armpit hair. A "real" bra means one with a cup size attached to it, as opposed to small, medium, large distinctions. Armpit hair is self-explanatory. Any amount will do. At this point, a girl will probably start her periods within 3-6 months, if she hasn't already.
It also occurs right after the growth spurt of adolescence. So, if a girl grew, grew, grew, last year and has slowed down (no more than 2.5 inches a year) then periods are right around the corner.
Average Ages And Average Time Between Stages
Another way to estimate is to remember when it all started. The very first sign is called breast budding. Budding simply means the nipple elavates a bit. It does not mean the girl has development that resembles a breast. This is later. To remember when this is, a girl should think of when the very, very first time was that she noticed anything different about her chest. In some girls, pubic hair is first, or at least the first thing she remembers. It will take an average of 4 1/2 years from this point, with a range of 1 1/2 to 6 years). Take this as the starting point. She will begin her growth spurt about this time. She will notice pubic hair about 6 months later. About 6 months after that (a total of one year after budding) she will be in her peak growth spurt, growing faster that she ever has. She will probably get her first training bra at this time. About a year after all this (a total of two years after budding), she will get a real bra and armpit hair. First period will come about 4 months before or after these events.
