I have a DVD installed on my PC?

I could play a DVD 5 months ago but now it won't even read CD or a DVD,
HELP!!!!
I did check device manager and it stated DVD was working properly

a friend had a simular problem and the cable was installed with the short end on the mb but even after correcting the dvd drive was bad check the cable to the drive
