A variety of aspects affect the quality and therefore the price of any pearl.

First off, take some time to learn the terms-of-the-trade. Ninety-nine percent of the pearls on the market today are cultured pearls. Pearls are cultured (farmed) in both freshwater and saltwater. Freshwater pearls are by far more common than saltwater pearls.

The type of pearl, the thickness of its nacre, its luster, the cleanliness and texture of its surface, its shape, its color, and its size all affect the quality and therefore its price. Also, some types of pearls are more common and prevalent than others, thereby affecting demand and desirability and price of the pearls.

Check the link below for information on determining the value and quality of pearls, pearl types and pearl names, and a glossary of term used in the pearl trade.

Good luck.

Because they go by perfection, size and color. If the pearls are big and uniform in size all the way around the necklace the more expensive they will be. Also the more unique the color the more expensive they will be as well.I think It is nice you are getting your mom a pearl necklace. I think every women should have a pearl necklace because they are so classy and they go with just about everything.

They do range in price depending on the size and regularity. Smooth, round ones are going to cost a lot more than bumpy rough ones. Here's a link below where you can see what they sell for before someone makes them into a necklace. I don't think any of these are top of the line, but for the price you're paying I hope you're getting a real killer piece of jewelry and not just a strand of lumpies!

confident, they are in all hazard authentic. Pearls are delicate and scratch fairly. The age-old try is to take a pearl and rub it against the front of your tooth. no rely if it particularly is gritty, it particularly is authentic; if it particularly is tender like glass, it particularly is pretend. to shelter them, save them faraway from aerosol sprays, alcohols and extreme warmth (e.g. interior a automobile in summer season). positioned them on AFTER putting on hairspray/physique spray, etc. to scrub, try water and a rag first. Use cleansing soap in case you're able to.

Just guessing, but I would say size and perfection of the pearls has something to do with it.

I asked my hubby your question and he said it's because circular, perfectly shaped ones are hard to find and not many of fresh water oysters produce them.
Hope this helps.
