Because Floyd came out in the 70's when we listened to their music, lit up a "left handed" cigarrette, just sat back with a bottle of wine, and "chilled and let the tunes go to our heads", hence the "head music", and believe it or not the Moody Blues were also "head music". Heads understood it, but the jox and the "beer"ies didn't, they couldn't get into it.

Back in the day when "Dark Side Of The Moon" came out, it was considered "head" music because it was just the thing to listen to when one got high on grass or acid.
