I tried synthetic division but I wasn't able to factor it, any help would be appreciated.

This is quadratic in x^2 say y

it is y^2+8y -48
= (y+12)(y-4)
= (x^2+12)(x^2-4)
= (x^2+12)(x+2)(x-2)

x^4 + 8x^2 - 48
= x^4 + 12x^2 - 4x^2 - 48
= (x^4 + 12x^2) - (4x^2 + 48)
= x^2(x^2 + 12) - 4(x^2 +12)
= (x^2 - 4)(x^2 + 12)
