being corny is a way to break the ice (start a conversation), and can also be used when the atmosphere is heavy (when everyone wants to talk gloom and doom) so the corny conversation lightens the mood.

i am of this opinion; people who are corny are really much smarter and wittier than those who are not or those who prefer to appear cool and "not lame". honestly, people who are corny see the funny side of things, the funny side of making puns, references to other things that are related to the subject at hand. and although you may not be laughing hysterically at that corny joke, it makes you snigger or laugh.
are you that serious? lighten up.
