Wonderful proverb! I'm familiar with it, and I would agree with it. Something positive can come from a lie or a bad situation. On the other hand, if destruction is brought about by telling the truth, nobody is helped. It is better to find ways to help your fellows.

A white lie told to make someone feel better is better than a truth that destroys. Lets say your best friend gets a really bad hair cut that is too short and is highly upset about it. A kind white lie saying the hair cut is fine, that they just need to get used to it is much more constructive than saying , BOY you look hideous. They can not grow hair back that fast, why destroy their ego over something they can not change. People often use TRUTH as an excuse to be rude or hostile or destroy another persons self concept or ego. Courtesy and social kindness may be lies of sorts but they help people cope.

I agree with it. It's better for you to lie if its for the good than to tell the truth and end up with disastrous consequences. Politicians often use this to good effect and because of that they keep their government going. It would be no good if they told the truth, since sometimes it backfires on you as different people may interpret it differently and this could cause confusion and distrust.
