Now you know how pickups work. You can do that with any electric guitar although with the new pickups you have to move the strings first and if they are in a solid body, you have to yell to be heard. Original pickups, such as pre 1960, used mics from telephones and that was the mic in the pickups. Pickups used on "cheap" guitars do not stray far from that design. That's why guitars get feedback through the amp. A sound loop is created when the sound of the amp is picked up by the mic in the pickup and goes back into the amp. Some pickups are more prone to feedback problems than others.

Well, I don't really see what being intermediate has to do with sound quality, but you didn't state what you really want.If you go to a dealer, ask them for certain characteristics of the pickups-warm, fat, clean, etc. Or just say the general style you are playing.

Same for guitars, its all going to differ depending on who you ask.A metalhead and a Jazzman are going to walk two different paths.

I have a Gibson Les Paul with Humbucking pickups but my Gibson SG has a P-90 pickup which is a single coil pickup and sounds really good!!! My buddy has Gibson "dirty fingers" pickups if you really want the high output sound!!!

The best pickups are seymour-duncan. For fat, warm clean sounds with character, go with the Seth Lover. For distortion, the Custom Custom rocks. If you're looking for single-coils, the Alnico 2 pickups they make SING

Thats a real open question. It depends on what you like.

Personally I find that Ibanez, and Fender both make good reasonably priced guitars.

For pickups I suggest Seymour duncan, dimarzio, fender, fishman

Amps: Fender all the way.

Cheers.

Fender is the original, so I'd go with that. Fenders are perfect for beginners, intermediate,or the experienced.
