It depends on the product used. Saline cathartics like CItroma will go thru you like a green tornado. Others usually take a few hours. The general rule for most products is: Take one or two in the PM for a BM in the AM. A word of caution with stimulants: If you feel like you need to pass gas, don't do it unless you are on the commode at the time.
