I pulled out my 8-bit wondermachine this morning and I realized... I still don't know how that light gun works.... Help me out???

I think the optical sensor in it picks up a certain frequency frame rate... so lets say the background is updated at like 100 frames per second, but the duck updates like 50 times per second. so the gun just has to count the frames...... ever see a computer monitor through a video camera? notice the bars running down the screen as it updates?
That or the sensor is told to pick up on a certain color.... but that would be hard to do considering you can change the color on the screen and still play.
