Need to replace the battery, common thing in laptops after long time use. Just look up the model on the brand (HP/DELL,ETC) website and can buy one from them.
Cheaper methods would be to get one off ebay.

Battery replacement is as easy as popping out the old one and dropping the new one in.

Like everyone says, get a new battery. First you can try this. Charge up your battery, and leave you laptop on overnight till it full discharges. Then fully recharge your battery, try it for two or three nights in a row to see if the battery stays charged longer. In the old days batteries that were constantly recharged before being fully discharged developed what was called a "memory" problem. Best of luck

Battery has conked off. See also if the charging system is at all working. Before changing the battery, however, please work out the economics of replacement vs replacement of the laptop itself. Present day centrino are supposed to be producing less heat than p-4 or amd and hence have better battery life.

Laptop battries do wear out and it would be advised to get a new one. But first make sure you have the battery in right or have it in at alll (you probaly have it in duh). You could call the computer help team Dell Compaq ect and ask them what they think. But it is probaly the battery.
