Philippines is a beautiful country to begin with, three major island called Luzon, Visaya and Mindanao. About 103 dialects and Tagalog is the national one. Economy is getting better and the art is phenomenal.

OK... I live there. Let's start with art.

Lots of Filipinos won't agree with me, but my feeling is that they're, to use the phrase in vogue, artistically challenged. They like to watch their "Sex Bomb" girls wiggling on their quiz shows, and when face to face with real culture, they don't understand. Clasical music is "like funeral music". Forget the museums, art galleries, and concert halls.

Now economy.
The president here says that the economy is getting better and better and.... that now the average yearly salary has reached US $ 1,400. There are three things that are destroying Philippines (Probably more than that).

1. Agricultural reform - where they divide your land to small pieces, and everybody gets some. So, the small farmers that couldn't make it, decided to get rich in the Big City. Guess what. Million squatters.

2. The Lina Law. -To help the squatters, you can't get them off your land without negotiation and finding them another place to squat in. How's that for being the lord of the manor?

3. Foreigners cannot own property - land, house, car... you name it. It's all in the filipino wives'/husbands' name.

I just returned 1 week ago from the a 3 week visit there. I was not impressed with the art I saw, but what musicians. And that is art in itself. Everyone, really everyone, does karaoke. And good at it too. The countryside is beautiful and many beaches are undeveloped and natural. Fishing villages, etc. Prices are higher than in other Southeast Asian countries and the the quality is much less in my opnion. Talking about taxis, transport, hotels, cafe's , etc. The people, at least in Manila, are not as friendly as people's in other Asian countries. Everywhere I went, there were beggers and people trying to rip me off. That sucked. But I did win a dance contest at the LA Cafe!! Then the girl I danced with got the money and never came back. There you go, my opinion.

i am a filipino. and here is my side of it....

filipino art is a mixture of different (foreign) influences handed down over several generations, but mostly spanish in taste and style. due to the fact of colonization of several countries, it blended in to what we call philippine art.. though, lately, american influence has greatly dominated philippine art (movies, sculptures, poems, etc)... somehow the spanish influence created more impact....

economy???... well the peso strengthening may appear as such, but it's too early to justify it's impact. it may seem that economy is recovering but in essence (in reality), it really doesnt seem so.

I'm half flip(philipino) um well there are alot of languages that the ppl speak but I speak tagalong( ta-ga-log). The main religion is catholic. The children, teens, and young adults are expected to respect their elders and take care of them first before anything else. Education is also a BIG expectation of the children and grandchildren. Family is our main importance. Some great dishes are lumpia (something like eggrolls), pansit (a noodle dish), and puto(something like a ricecake). Oh yeah and we eat ALOT of rice.Um thats just some of what I know...
