I have a Toshiba S15-S479 laptop with a cracked screen and a broken internal DC input plug. Can I put it's components into a desktop case (with desktop power supply). It has an external monitor output.

I don't need another laptop, I have a brand new loaded core 2 duo. I just wanted the cooling capacity of a desk top case for my old cpu so I can leave it running 24/7 for tv recording ect... (865PE w/2.8ghz HT) and to recover my data.

Nothing is impossible, but this could cost you more that you imagine. Maybe not even worth the labor.
The ATX power supply cannot be used on the laptop without some adaptation in one of its cables, since you will have to pick the one that gives you the same voltage the original laptop power supply has and find a way to plug it in, correctly.
The laptop main board has already all the different voltage regulators, all having a single input voltage from the external power supply.
The desktop case has bays for CD which, is unlikelly you will find a way to connect to the laptop mainboard. The same goes for the hard drive.
So if you will just dump the laptop guts inside the desktop case and connect the power and and external video, it works, but I don't think that is what you want.

Why? Don't waste your time shoving it into a desktop case. The power requirements are different.

OK...fix the DC input or hardwire your power converter to it. Plug a monitor into the back (hopefully you set the video so that an external monitor could take over.) Plug in a USB mouse and Keyboard. Whee, you're all set.

With any luck, this setup will last until you go out and get a real computer!

Dude! Get a Dell!

you can not put the internal components of a laptop in a PC desktop. They are not compatible. The answer for you is to get the laptop repaired at a place for the DC input jack. The video output is an alternative for the cracked screen. Also keep in mind that laptop speeds are completely different from Desktops. hard drives on PC's are 7200 and laptops are 5400, 4200.

Not worth the effort. Have u check the price of an dc converter, I have seen them at relative low prices. But, I would not even try to make ur laptop a desktop. Not when a new machine starts out at 300. And if it is ur data ur worried about, u can get a conversion cable that u can plug ur drive into and then into a USB port.

good luck

No, however, you can get a docking station for it. I think that the on the back of the laptop or on the bottom of it, there is a connector that has a bunch of little pin connectors thats covered by a spring loaded door. Essentially when you slide the laptop into the docking station, its provided with power and all of the necessary connections to emulate desktop usage. Being that your laptop is somewhat older you can get a docking station for it (sometimes also referred to as a "port replicator") relatively cheaply.

I managed to break off the AC adaptor plug inside of the computer and rip the screen off of my laptop all in the same day. I bought the docking station off of ebay for $100 and now my laptop works good as new with my full size keyboard, monitor and mouse.

I agree with the man suggesting the docking station. They are very reliable and don't really take up that much space. They are often used in businesses so a worker can take their work home with them easily , but have the lower eye strain of a desk top at work.
