If it was a deep cut.. Yes it's still going to bleed until it seals. Just keep it wraped up and clean it off once in a while.. If it falls off you know it's infected.

Signs of infection: redness, swelling, pus, heat.

It doesn't sound like your wound is infected. You probably nicked a blood vessel when you cut it, so it may appear darker around the area, much like a bruise would look. It probably keeps bleeding because a cut on a finger is in a tough position to close up. You're constantly moving and using your fingers. You bend your finger just a little bit and it's enough to stretch the skin beyond what the new cut can handle, and it breaks open again. If the bleeding situation continues, it may need a few stitches to hold it closed, just until it's healed well enough to stay closed on its own.

Of course, if you have doubts about the wound, I'd get it checked by a Dr.

DO NOT under any circumstances use hydrogen peroxide on a wound. Those same CUTE bubbles that are eating away at the bad bacteria are also eating away at the good tissue. It also slows the healing process and leaving a greater risk for infection. Depending on the depth of the wound, and by your description it's deep, go to the emergency room if it's not healing. They may just put a butterfly on it instead of stitches, but you may have also cut a muscle that you're not aware of. I can not bend my middle finger too well due to a stupid cut with a knife and a fear of stitches.

You may need stitches if its still bleeding. You will know if it is infected if you start seeing red streaks running up your finger from the wound. Try putting some antibiotic cream on the cut, after washing it well with warm soapy water and then put a bandage on it snugly (be careful not to cut off circulation to the finger) and maybe go to the drug store and get a finger splint that you can put on the finger to keep yourself from banging it. Ask the pharmacist for some help, or just go to the first aid section, the have all sorts of things to put on your fingers, hands, toes, etc. You need to protect it from getting banged on things.

You should keep it completely clean, use an antiseptic cream or lotion and keep it covered until it doesn't bleed any more. Clean it & change the dressing about once a day. If it's infected it will feel hot & you might see a red streak going up your hand from it. If this happens see a doctor straight away.
You should also probably check whether your anti-tetanus shots are up-to-date.

There are several factors involved but generally any wound that is only 24 hrs old could be classified as infected. At that time, the leukocytes are fighting off the infection, and the healing process is underway. If you treat the wound by cleaning, applying germicide etc. you can shorten the healing process.

If you put hydrogen peroxide on it and it fizzes up..thats how you can tell if its infected!

You should clean it out with the hydrogen peroxide and bandage it really well with gause and some sports tape or some medical wrap..

You can also get it checked out by the Doctor he'll be able to tell you if its infected or not if you dont have the hydrogen peroxide available..

Darkness (pinkness, not any other color) around a cut is normal. You can tell if it is infected by the following signs:

* Increased pain, swelling, redness, or warmth around the affected area.
* Red streaks extending from lymph nodes in the affected area toward the body.
* Drainage of pus from the area.
* Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin.
* Fever.

I am no doctor, but I think if it gets darker it is getting better, if gets a yellowish color it is probably infected.

Plus I hear the staff <-spelling- infection is going around, so you should probably get it covered up.

infection symptoms include increased pain and /or swelling of the area, area may be warm to touch, yellow or green drainage, fever-best thing to do is keep it clean--wash with soap and water several times a day and keep it covered with a dressing if it is bleeding or draining
