In addition to the cute/smart previous contributions, To repatriate does not only mean to return or send back a persona to her/his "fatherland", but also to return, recuparate or give back any other resources, like financial founds, symbolic treasures, like archeological specimens, endangered animals, believes, taken awayy masterpices of local art, and so on.
Sometimes, the repatriation process is against the will of the returned person, or the eventual possesor of a think, as in the case of ilegal innmigrants or prosecuted criminals, stolen or ilegally outaken goods.

The word consists of 're'(again) and 'patriate"(pater=father, patriate(to father )
So 're-patriate' means 'to father again i.e. restore somebody to his father ie.fatherland
(normally we call it mother land. The term fatherland(used in Germany is a reminder of the patriarchal society)
Now who can be restored to fatherland = one who is estranged therefrom
i.e..refugees, prisoners of war. extradited criminals
