The lyrics tell a bittersweet story of the ageless dragon Puff and his playmate Jackie Paper, a little boy who grows up and loses interest in the imaginary adventures of childhood and leaves Puff alone and depressed. The story of the song takes place "by the sea" in the fantasy land of Honah Lee.

Well, the whole song confused me, but i dont mind when songs do that, it make people talk about them...for years.
If we go with the view the song being about the innocence of childhood, then the song doen't say what happened to jackie paper, apart from he grew up and left childish things behind...like his dragon friend. So, he probably got a dead end job, but met a lovely girl who made is world complete again. (I hope for him, if jackie is a boy). Otherwise, he might have just become a pirate, as he seemed to like sailing in the song, then who knows....
Now, if we go with the (contentious) ganja interpretation (aka tokin on a doobie as i read somewhere), then "jackie paper" (aka rizlas in the UK/france, tally-ho in austrailia, or bugler, a low end US brand) was left in the store (not bought) and "puff the dragon" (the...erm green stuff/puff) was left in the container (his cave), or eaten (if the cave= the mouth). Thankfully, jacky PAPER would have been bought by someone else after 30 years, and hopefully not used to wrap rolling cigarette, but used for a higher purpose...
Personally, its the fact 'puff' might have been left on his own in a container/cave for 30 years that keeps me awake at night. What a waste of "magic dragon". Must be strong by now i imagine!! There are always plenty of replacement 'jackie papers' around though. DRAG-on...PUFF, come on people, there is clearly a reference or two here.
Regardless of puff, i'm sure whoever started using 'the other toys' (harder drugs perhaps?) in the song also forgot about puff too, as well as their dignity and cash flow.
So, the moral of the song. Kids... stick with puff the magic dragon, he is your friend. Other 'toys' wont bring you satisfaction and poor 'puff' will just be alone and depressed.

"A dragon lives forever
But not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings
Make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened,
Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon,
He ceased his fealess roar"
It doesn't exactly say what happened to little Jackie Paper, so we're probably supposed to come up with our own explaination. I think it could mean Jackie Paper grew up, and stopped believing in whimsical things like dragons. The verse "Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys" points in that direction.
I really love that song.

Jackie Paper stopped believing in Honah Lee and Puff. The song is bittersweet, it happens to most all of us at some point and time. We ground ourselves in the believable and deny the fantastic. From that point foward we only See our own personal " Honah Lee and Puff" in our deepest dreams.

Nothing really happened to Jackie, except he grew up, and didn't believe in dragons anymore. That's what the song is about, children growing up, and moving on to more "grown up" things in life, instead of the playful imaginations that children have.

The song is about an imaginary dragon. When Jackie Paper came no more, he had out grown the imaginary dragon, or friend. He had grown up.

he got stoned, and forgot. you take a puff off of a joint. or you take a drag off one. you roll it with paper. you puff, theres magic. that was quite a controversy for a while. peter, paul and mary denied it, but i dont know. they had to do something to keep on playing that music.
