I'm a magazine publisher and first you must know that publishing a magazine is about as large a task a person can take on. However, it is very rewarding and a ton of fun. I use 32lb. Premium Matte C2S 8.5x11 paper, and the computer progaram is very expensive, too. Most publishers use the program called InDesign by Adobe, and that is what I use, too. InDesign runs anywhere from $1,100 to $2,000 for the program, but it is incredibly useful...all your page layouts and everything right there. Do some research on it if you'd like. Also, if you're serious about magazines, I suggest a book by James B. Kobak called, "How to Start a Magazine and Publish it Profitably." Mr. Kobak has consulted on magazines since 1946, so he knows what he's talking about and his book is very helpful. I bought my copy on Amazon.com.

Good luck!

I think the best place to start by contacting your local newspaper. They will probably give you some help, and may even send a reporter or photographer to talk to you and your club. (I worked for a newspaper and we often got requests to do this kind of thing).
You don't need expensive software necessarily, so long as you have access to a computer with something like Microsoft Word you'll be fine. It's going to be uneconomical for you to print on the glossy paper that many magazines are printed on, so perhaps you might want to think about printing one master copy and having it photocopied.
Good luck,
