1GB would be considered a "pretty good" amount - although if you really want a decent system nowadays you should have at least 2GB.

This is a good question. FOR THE AVERAGE USER. Generally the number you want to go for is 512MB. 512MB is not too much nor is it too little. Anything over this is generally overkill. I'm defining the average user as a person who checks mail/internet surfing etc... and uses word/processor programs. This amount of ram is enough to do DVD encoding for example and run some small photoshop picture editing programs. If you wish to go advanced.
If you plan to use the system as a gamming machine you probably want to go for 1GB or more. This will give you enough ram to play the most demanding games but you have to have a great video card to match in graphics bandwidth. You can go over 1GB however there are very little applications that call for this.
All in all memory is soooo cheap it dosen't really matter you can set a system up to specs with as little as 40 dollars.

Most "low end" computers today come with 512mb of memory. That is able to run Windows XP without too much trouble for simple applications (word processing, e-mails, Internet, etc.). If you want to do anything with graphics (beyond just look at them), you will want to double that to 1 GB (1024mb). If you want to do video editing or play any of the "high end" games, you will need at least 2GB of memory. To edit videos well, takes about 4GB.
So a "good amount" depends on what you plan to do with the computer.

According to Microsoft 512mb is good, but 1gb is the average for most. I have 2.5gb on mine as I record DVDs and edit graphics and never get a slow down on a 2.8ghz machine.

For Windows XP, I'd 512mb will work but I recommend 1gb. For vista, I recommend two if you want to use all of the features it has smoothly.

If you are running Windows XP, I would recommend at least 512mb of memory. If you are someone who does a lot of multi-tasking, I would recommend at least 1gb of memory, if not more.

It depends on the amount your motherboard can take!
Some boards have a two gigabyte maximum.
But I have 4 gigabytes on mine!
