Good writing is all about two important things:
#1) being organized.
#2) staying on subject.

It really help to start off slow, to make a list of your ideas and the points you want to make, then find a way to get them organized that they make sense. I know it sounds goofy, and it sounds like a waste of time, but it really is worth it.
Don't worry so much about descriptive words, or trying to make it sound pretty. You can use all the big words you know, but if it doesn't make sense, you'll be sorry. So simply focus on what you're saying, not how you're saying it.
If your material is good, using plain words will do the trick just fine.
Start off simple. Write a plain essay, nothing fancy, to see if your ideas all make sense. Have someone else read it, and they can point out parts that are boring or confusing. So then you change it. When your material is good, THEN you go back and spice it up. Good writing is not in the ability to sit and write. Good writing is taking something you wrote and making it better.
Also remember, the best writing is the kind that comes naturally. Ever read a magazine article, or a good book, and it sounds like the writer is having a conversation with you? That's all writing is. It has to be natural. Let your personality come through, and write something you would like to read.
And lastly, when you're done writing, have someone else read it again. They can pick up grammar mistakes, stupid lines, facts you got mixed up, and parts that don't make sense. Don't ever say you're done with it. Until the day you turn it in, you still have time to do one more correction. If possible, have an English teacher, librarian, or other educated person go over it for you. They can help you with the serious grammar and spelling.

If you're really interested in resources, here are some fine places to start:
