itsyouand said that it is by degeneration or trauma.... but if there is degeneration, lifting too much can herniate the disc. Of course, according to my neurosurgeon, mine was degenerated enough that I might have done it sneezing! But I remember feeling it pull when I was working with weights and after that I couldn't move my arms properly because it had herniated and was putting pressure on the nerves.

No. C5-6 disc is always by degeneration or trauma, not by lifting weight.

People who carry heavy loads on their heads or suffer "head versus windshield" type blows to the top of their head pressing downward on the spine can suffer injury to their cervical spine.
