Making Avatars?

How do you make avatars? Not like the little person on Yahoo, but on real sites like avies.com I can't figure it out will someone please tell me how to do it?

well, I'm sure there's an instruction how to make an avatar...they not make that site to make the visitor's guess what are they going to do...just find okay...?!!
