Not sure of your question, but my guess it that you want to know why it considered distinctively American. I believe that Americans are idividual pioneers by nature, and American Jaz is just one example. It's roots are in the street rythmn and blues of the impoverished American South....Its rythyms have basis in African American slave songs, and it's musical shape allows for anyone to join in for 8 bars.......it was mostly improvisational, but over time, certain tunes took shape and were written down.

In a nutshell, Jazz is an original American musical art form that originated around the start of the 20th century in New Orleans, rooted in African American musical styles blended with Western music technique and theory. Jazz uses blue notes, syncopation, swing, call and response, polyrhythms, and improvisation.

i agree with melissa, but back then, no one knew what those terms were. it was strictly improvisional in the beginning, there was no structure, technique, or any of that. there were no limits. other music was traditional, this was new. it was born here.
