First of all, England does not have a King or Queen, the United Kingdom does. The Kingdom of England has not existed since 1707.
If the United Kingdom were no longer a democratic monarchy then it would most likely be a republic and would be in a very sad state of affairs. There is, though, very little chance of this happening in our lifetimes. Numerous polls have shown that there is incredibly little republicanism in the United Kingdom.
You are correct that the Monarchy plays a large role in the national identity of the United Kingdom. Fifteen other nations are also represented by the Sovereign.
Our current system provides us with an impartial Head of State and a system of checks that rivals most other modern-day democracies, not to mention an incredible sense of stability in tougher times (a quick review of the effect of George VI & Elizabeth during WWII will confirm this).
To answer your question of whether anyone would even think of not having a Monarchy: Yes, they would. There have been republican Members of Parliament, but they have never been able to rally even the slightest bit of support for the cause. To abolish the Monarchy would require an Act of Paliament and the support of the British people, neither of which has ever reached anywhere near the level that would be required. The Monarchy as an institution rarely becomes unpopular. Those representing it occasionally fall out of favour (such as when very little reaction was shown after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales), but have always quickly 'rebounded' and gained the favour of the public once again.
The British Monarchy is one of Europe's oldest and finest institutions and we are honoured and proud to have it.

Here, here. A monarchy makes up part of England's identity, whether some people like it or not. I cannot imagine an England without one.

Long live the Queen!

Well, hey, I thought of not having one there. Is that so bad? Just the other day, in fact, I thought of not having a monarchy in England. Are you going to condemn me for that?

The first time I ever thought of not having a monarchy in England, I almost immediately realized that it is not up to me. Yet I thought it. And other times I thought it.

Yes, I thought it but didn't know why. So the answer to your question is: I don't know.

This is difficult for Americans to understand. I have always wondered why the British want a monarchy. They do not actually have any power, and I don't see that they are exactly good examples of morally correct living. But, then, Americans have reasons not to like royalty.

Most of the monarchs of England have been foreigners. The present Queen comes from German stock and her husband is a greek immigrant. Their englishness is not very apparent so they would not be a great loss to national identity.
Monarchy is a remnant of feudalism when most englishmen were used as serfs by the norman french invaders and it's about time this outdated system was dropped and england had a proper democracy where the head of state is elected. How can England invade other countries like Iraq to impose democracy if it can't have it in its own country.
