Wouldn't this prove that although science has proved many truths mankind is still clinging to old beliefs?

Simplicity. It takes too many words to say "I woke up this morning when the Earth's rotation cause the sun to appear above the horizon".

The sun DOES rise and set....from our relative position. By the way, the sun is NOT stationary....nor is any other object in the physical universe. Describing the movement of any object in the universe by how it move relative to us on earth is just as accurate as anything else.

We didn't always know that the sun is stationary... and even now we only assume that the sun is stationary, we only know it does not revolve around the earth. Interesting to think what we would say to replace "sunrise".

Because people started saying that before they knew that the sun was stationary. No one ever changed the saying.

Historically it was what it seemed to do, as you have said. I guess the phrases we use have been used since prior to the new idea, that the earth revolves. In somerespects out language changes very slowly!

because these little phrases originated long ago in Europe before people knew of a space
