When the opposing team has a player in the penalty box... the team at full strength has the "power play". Since they have one more player on the ice, that gives them a better chance to score. The team with one less player (sometimes 2 if there are 2 in the penalty box) is in what is refered to as the "penalty kill" since they are trying to kill the time on the clock with out letting the other team score. If a team scores during the power play, the player in the penalty box gets to come out even if his time is not up yet.

As many have said a powerplay is when one team has more players allowed on the ice than the other team. However a few key things have been left out
1) Penalties can be 2 - 4 - 5 - 10 minutes longer. Two minute penalties are just your general hooking holding obstruction kind of calls.
2) Four minute penalties are for more sever penalties lets say someone is cross checked across the neck or high sticked in the eye or face and blood is drawn. Generally that will lead to four minutes of power play time. If a team scores in the first two minutes of the powerplay they receive two minutes left to try and score again (On a two minute power play as soon as you score the powerplay ends).
3) Five minute power plays are for the most severe of severe penalties boarding is the most common 5 minute major. When this occurs the team is on the power play and STAYS on the powerplay for five minutes regardless of how many times they score
4) Ten minute penalties are for severe personal actions they get you kicked from the game your team is not punished for 10 minutes they on occasion have a two minute penalty and are shorthanded for those two minutes.
5) Finally when a team is shorthanded they have the advantage of being able to ice the puck with out fear of an icing call.

In hockey when someone does something against the rules, he/she gets a penalty and must go in the penalty box for a defined amount of time (usualy 2 minutes) during this time his team will have to play with only four players (instead of 5). The other team then has a man advantage, this is called a powerplay.

A powerplay is when the opposing team commits a penalty. The team is shorthanded. The other team has 1 more player, therefore they have a powerplay.

Hi
a powerplay is when the other team has a player in the penaly box because he/she tripped someone, hooked, slashed and so on. So depending on what age group, mites and squirts hve 1:30 for a penaly and above that level, 2:00 penaltys. There are minor penaltys, double minor, major and misconduct. and so when the other team has a player in the box, a team is on a powerplay. that team has more skaters than the other team.
hope i helped

When a opposing team member gets a penalty, they have to go to the penalty box.
The other team has "one extra" player thus the powerplay.

If team "A" has a player in the PENALTY BOX, then they will be short one player for that amount of time (usually 2 minutes). This gives team "B" an extra man, and puts them in a position of POWER, thus the name POWER PLAY.

a power play is when a penalty is called and the opponent has a man in the penalty box, making them shorthanded. Then they refer to the other team as having a power play... it is any time that they have a 1 or more man advantage.
