when my son was 10 I baught him a 1970 1/2 chevy camerro. his father wanted to build him a motor for this car, so (knowing better) i sent him two thousand dollars to do so, and regardless of the details, im not sure what i've got. does any one have information on how to obtain what motor we have based on block numbers?

Well, first you need to tell wether it is a 6 cylinder or V-8. ASSUMING it's a V-8, there will be a number cast into the block at the rear, behind the driver's side cylinder head, that will tell you which block it is. It is easier to properly ID than the stamped number on the front. The stamped number will actually give you more info such as the type of vehicle it was installed in (nice for finding out if it is the original engine, ect...), but that info is harder to come by. You will most likely have to clean off some grime, ect to see the number, and it's not easy to see even then, because of the location (you will need a light of some sort). It will be a number like 3970010, (which is a 350), or something similar. If you can get the number and email me, I can ID it for you. wrench50cal@yahoo.com

there is a stamped number on the left side of the engine block just above where the water pump mounts . It's about an inch and a half long and about a half inch wide . there is a series of numbers and letters there . these identify where the engine was assembled, month , day , year , and what they came in. Your 1970 camaro came stock with two different motors . a 307 or a 350. the sufix code for the 307's will end in CNE,CNF,CND,CNC. The 350 sufix codes will end in CNM,CNN,CNI,CNK,CRE,CNJ,CTC,CTB. You probly wont have to worry about finding the last two ( CTC,CTB ) because they are the 360 horse solid lift z-28 versions and were sought after. if you do find one , HID IT LIKE IT WAS GOLD!!!!! Oh and if you sent some one two grand to build a motor , he,s got enough money to build two .

You did non say if it's a V8 or 6.. could be a 307 small block V8 or a big block 396... or a 250 cubic in. straight 6.. start by finding out your basic block... look and see if anything is written on the top of the air cleaner if you have the original..
