I will be turning 14 in January and my dad isn't going to let me get a job and I really need one. I have tried talking, asking, and explaining to him. He won't listen and won't tell me why he doesn't want me to get a job. I am totally out of ideas on what to do. I can legally get a job at 14. I would be putting like 50% of what I make for collage. Its not like my dad would have to drive me or anything I would ride my bike there. I am really responsible and I would think he would be happy that I don't want to sit on my but all year. Any suggestions would help. Also Do you know of any places that arn't fast food that would hire a 14 year old?

I started working at 14 had to cuz my mom got divorced from her second husband and decided to go back to college. If I wanted anything it was up to me, looked older and lied said I was 15 law here is same whether 14 or 15 but work restictions under 16 make it tough to legally work. After 6 months I was the full time closing cook, but I was very athletic and my size and despostion made me great at football, couldn't work around it but continued baseball. So I have mixed emotions, the grades in school suffered as did my attendance, but I was in gifted education, intelligent and school was easier for me than most. I also have some really bad regrets about not continuing to play football worse case secnario I figure was I end up a mediocre college player. I ask myself what if all the time. But working at such a young age also left me feeling cheated out of my childhood, I matured way too fast. Fast food and restaurants usually have sexually charged atmoshperes and could easily leave a 14yr old in a vunerable position with older co-workers. I had to do it out of nessistiy your dad knows whats best for you, and I'd be glad you have him around, woulda gave and arm and a leg to have mine around, theres plenty of time later in life for work, don't rush it, I did and regret it for the most part!

The laws differ from state to state, so start by going to your school. They should be able to tell you whether or not they can give you a work permit. If they can, then obviously there is somewhere in your state that hires 14 year olds.

Sometimes grocery stores will hire as baggers, restaurants as hostesses and dishwashers. Learn CPR and work as a lifeguard. Find the local orchards and ask about fruit picking. Paper delivery also takes kids.

The same thing with a kid I know...
It's pretty hard for a kid to make money these days. How about trying to buy and sell stuff on Ebay? I'm not sure what that would be. I've some projects that sell well, but not everybody is willing to do that or know much about it.

You will be working for the rest of your life. Try to stay away from it as long as possible and enjoy school.
