Does one actually skin a mule. ICK. And why? Is that why there was an old song called The Muleskinner Blues?

No they don't skin mules. It comes from the horse and wagon days of our history. They were wagon drivers pulled by teams of mules and called muleskinners, just as the drivers of wagons pulled by horses were called teamsters they were the fore runners of our modern day tractor-trailer drivers hauling freight and food across the country.
If I remember the song correctly, don't you hear something that sounds like a whip crackingfrom time to time?
