so i read that its a mental thing that guys act distant before they fall really hard for a girl and that after that they will then act all lovey dovey or whatever is this true or is it bull???

Some guys act exactly like that, some don't.

It's impossible to generalise.

Uh, NO. If he is acting distant he would have something else going on or just feelings of not wanting to be together any more (talking from experience and being a guy). So acting distant would be a bad thing but spending more time with you and wanting to be around you more would be a better sign of him falling for you.
