This is a hot-button issue that's a bit more comlicated than it looks on the surface.
You really can't blame schools for doing that, though -- athletic functions bring in the money as fast as the schools spend it, and for colleges, it's a big way to boost admissions.
Consider UNC Chapel Hill, the beloved home of the Carolina Tar Heels, where my husband went. They promote their school to fans of their team, by saying, "hey, if you're a full time student here, you can come to all the home games for free." I personally know two people who enrolled at that school just for that reason. Same thing for Duke and Wake Forest.
The fact of it is, if people bought tickets to see scholastic tournaments, schools would promote them more. But scholastic competitions don't draw big crowds, and thus don't make any money for the schools. If people idolized academic achievers the way they idolize athletes, the schools would be more geared toward academics. They're simply giving us what we ask for.

Athletics are a way to get into college and they are an easier way than academics. Athletics are not being more highly judged than academics because in order for your athletics to be judged you have to have certain grades to be on the team. So you cannot write a paper on this because grades are the determining factor of whether or not you are judged upon your athletic skills.

I agree that athletics are definently begining to become more important than academics. I am on my school's scholatic bowl team and we won in our county(completly undefeated)but no one really seemed to care. But if any of our sports teams win anything a big deal is made about. We also just got two new sports fields built on campus when that money could have gone to education.

one thing that most people in high schools or colleges know is that people take a lot of pride in the sports teams. the high schools or colleges value the people that play on their teams which gives their school honor. so sometimes people will care more about a team that gives their school pride than a bunch of kids that can excel a little better than others in academics.
