Black Sabbath are considered to be a massively influential heavy metal/ blues rock/ prog rock band of the 60's and 70's. I feel it is erroneous to claim they invented heavy metal, as I feel this accolade belongs to Pete Townshend and Paul McCartney (Helter Skelter, anyone?).
In recent years, they have been cited as the progenitors of Grunge (eg Master of Reality, Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath), Doom Metal (esp. Hand of Doom from Paranoid), Post-Rock (the middle section of Snowblind from Volume 4), and indeed Groove Metal (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Master of Reality, esp. Sweet Leaf).
Tony Iommi, their lead guitarist is perhaps most famous for losing one of his fingers and playing with prosthetics moulded from fairy liquid bottles. That and writing what are often considered to be some of rock and metal's greatest riffs and song strctures.

they came out in 1970. back then music wasnt categorized like it is now. they are considered heavy metal. they had some line-up changes and every offshoot of that band played pretty much the same type of music. there are many others from that era. blue cheer, iron butterfly, cream, to name a few. type in black sabbath on the net. youll find out more there.

Classic Rock, they have been around since 1970 when their self titled album was released.
Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones are some good bands like them.

BLACK SABBATH ARE A GODLY METAL BAND. THEY SHAPED METAL AND IT WAS NEVER THE SAME they started in the 60's and had ozzy osbourne. then in 1970,, ozzy left and Dio replaaced him. they are not an 80's band!!! u should get Paranoid great album

they were the true godfathers of Heavy Metal...Most say that was Led Zeppelin, but they would be like the alternative music of today...when you listen to Ozzy and Sabbath you know you are listening to real Heavy Metal

Try late 60's early 70's when they were first big and still had Ozzy Osbourne as their frontman!
