Ok, obviously, we all know that you're gonna die if you fall in lava. BUT! my question is, what exactly happens to the body? do you die instantly? or does your flesh literally melt off your bones? any ideas?

FOR THE RECORD: I'm not sick and twisted, its just that i just watched LOTR, u know, return of the king, and Gollum fell in, so, u know, gears started turning.

Movies are all science fiction.

There is only a certain distance humans can go near a Lava pool or else they will die.

The sulfur fumes alone from the volcano is lethal enough to kill a healthy well-fit athlete much more an ordinary person.

When a person falls into a Lava pool (although this has only been tested with a human dummy complete with internal organs) -- the dummy -- immediately bursts into flames as if its a match. In a matter of seconds, the liquid inside the body is dried while fumes of body steam goes out... What is left is a soote of black sticky burning smoking ash.

NOTE:

You do not sink in a Lava pool. You combust on top of it.

The water content would try to boil and then the fat would burn and also explode, both very quickly, so you might well explode. Of couse, depending on how confined the area was, you would be dead probably before you hit the lava from the intense heat.

See Star Wars episode III, the scene where Anakin loses the duel with Obi Wan...

First his clothes catch fire, then his skin blisters, bubbles and finally chars. Its very convincing CGI ad makeup work.

I'm sure the body would remain until the water boiled out of it, then would burn black, eventually leaving only bones which would also eventually burn.

But thats just a guess from watching too much television

and dont forget the sithe lord in star wars. that lava sure did make him ugly. I think your flesh would burn and if hot enough, you would be creamated and reduced to gaseous matter and/or dust. If it was close to the volcanic crater and really superheated, your dust could even be vaporized so there was nothing left to put in the crematorium urn.
