Any modern supersport like the GSXR line and R6 are racing replica's are not beginning bikes. Seriously, look for Kawasaki Ninja 500R, Ninja 650R or a Suzuki GS500 or SV650. You need to look for a bike with a parallel twin engine. All of these are excellent bikes with designs that have remained relatively unchanged for years now. They'll offer you 50-70hp compared to the 110hp+ of modern supersports. These bikes also have a more linear power band so you don't have to rev up to 10k rpm's to get any speed. They are plenty fast and can outrun almost any car on the street up to about 110mph. Not to mention 50-70 miles per gallon. Sit on a couple of bikes and pick the one that fits and looks best. As long as you get a Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, or Yamaha and it's not an inline 4 engine, it's hard to go wrong. Buy a cheap used bike first, then buy yourself a new supersport when your ready. Good luck and happy riding!

I just picked up a Suzuki GS500F for about your price, with just one year and under 1,400 miles on it. It's got the same style as a GSXR in a somewhat easier to ride package. It's got a better power to weight ratio than a WRX, and it cornes like a dream.

There's a couple other 500 cc sport bikes out there that make good first bikes; Kawasaki and Buell both have something in this range too. All are pretty decent choices for your first bike. The Ninja 250 isn't quite as powerful, but it will still do 100 mph and out-accelerate most cars.

If you want an automatic, you'll need to give up a bit of speed - virtually all true sportbikes are manual. But there are a few choices out there that still look sporty; check out the Honda Reflex and Yamaha Morphous. Both of these are technically scooters, but sure don't look like it.

I'd recommend staying under 50 hp for your first bike. As I indicated earlier, that's still faster than many performance cars on the road. Something with 100 hp like most 600's out there will be pretty tricky for a first time rider - you'll have enough to worry about getting shifting down without thinking and learning how to corner without having to worry about a bike with too much power and extra-touchy brakes.

And one last thing - I definitely recommend taking some riding lessons, such as those offered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. These give you a bit of practice time in a safe environment on the school's bikes, so you don't have to worry too much about hitting things or dropping the bike. Good preparation for riding on the street.

I would not recomend a crotch rocket for a first bike because sure as heck you wiil lay it down. My youngest brother laid down his 2 day old katana, sand on a corner. I would buy a 2-3 year old 500- 750 cc bike without a faring (they are made of plastic and break easilly ). After you ride for a year or 2 get what you want. You should be able to get rid of bike 1 for almost the same money as you paid. Ride safe!

Get something around 500cc like a GS500. A 250 Ninja at 70-75mph has it's ears pinned back and getting one up to that speed takes awhile. If you don't know how to ride though, an old used one might not be a bad idea, as you'll have a good chance of dropping it while learning. If you prefer a cruiser style, a 650 Vstar would be a decent choice.

I agree with a couple of the others on a Kawasaki Ninja 500 or even the 250 Ninja. Have a look at them both, the 250 has a little more lower faring than the 500. The 250 is about $2995 brand new to & they hold the resale vaue really well to.
The Kawasaki 650 is pretty cool to, more than $4k though.

I have a new 2006 Kawasaki Ninja 500R. It will do 100mph easily and I weigh 260lbs. If you are looking for a good inexpensive crotch rocket the Ninja is what you should look at. You should be able to find a 2004 or 2005 in great shape for less than 4grand. They only run a little over 5 grand brand new.

Backwards but normal.
Fit before style, if you do not fit on the bike correctly you can not ride it correctly.
Any bike with 400 cc and over can break a hundred.
So you get a bike that will do 180 without breaking a sweat, anywhere you can drive it?
Get a bike that fits your body size with a look you like and it will go fast enough if it is running correctly.

I started on a kawasaki Ninja 500R, very nice bike with decent power and handles well. If you want to go bigger then jump on a Honda CBR F4i and just take it easy until you get comfortable. Great reliable bike and great beginner bike to grow on. Remember you control the bike and the throttle, so the bike only goes as fast and crazy as you make it go. Take it easy out there and remember to always wear FULL GEAR from head to toe if you can, it could one day save your life. I'm and old Harley man. It would be difficult for me to recommend a crotch rocket. If this is your first bike I strongly recommend something more traditional and less powerful than a crotch rocket.
