Ok, there are a few "old wives tales" that help, but not all the time. First, please tell me that you are at least 37 weeks pregnant, if not, don't even try any of this stuff. I know you are tired of being pregnant, but you have to wait until it's time. You don't want to deliver a pre-mature baby...I know....I am a labor and delivery nurse.
Cod liver oil is just going to make you poop....the dehydration from pooping can cause contractions. As soon as you get to the hospital and they hydrate you the contractions will slow down and go away. If you wait too long at home while pooping and get to dehyrated that's not good for the baby.
Sex is said to work. It's a combo of the orgasm and the semen that can bring on contractions.
Walking is always good. Have sex, lay around for a bit, then go for a long walk. If you are contracting, walking is the best thing to help make them stronger and help labor along.
Just ask your doctor if they will induce labor if it's near your due date. "Old wives tales" help, but getting induced is the only sure way if your not in labor on your own.

Some things that are suggested are walk, have sex, eat spicy food, drive down bumpy roads, and scrub your kitchen floor on your hands and knees. I have had 4 babies who were all born past their due dates. I tried all of these things and none worked for me, but some women say they worked for them. I suspect they would have gone into labor with or without the spicy food or whatever. Stay away from anything you ingest, such as castor oil. That causes diarrhea and you'll be miserable dealing with that and labor. I don't know anyone who has tried it, but everything I read about castor oil says don't use it to try to bring on labor.

There are a lot of old wives tales out there. One of them is to take a bumpy ride in a car. Another one is to drink Cod Liver Oil. If the baby is ready to be born, then ask your OB/GYN to start your labor. Good Luck.

well i was told to loads of things and nothing would work. Th etwo things i didnt want to try were the ones that ended up workin. I went for a long walk down the beach - apparentley sand has something to do with it. Bizzare i know but i had a 30 min walk down there. went into labour the next day. Also raspberry leaf tea. Absolutley disgusting but if yr desperate its worth it. I must have had a cup every 2 hours. So it was one of them that worked for me.
good luck

So far on here all I've seen are "urban legends" and "old wive's tales" none of which have been proven affective in starting labor, especially that tired old "cod liver/castor oil" myth. All that's going to do is make you poop, and unless the uterus is housed within the bowels all that is going to come out is S H I T.

Science/medicine still hasn't figured out what causes labor. You can try to have sex, eat really spicy food, walk, exercise, or anything else you've heard of. None of these worked for me with either of my two pregnancies. Bottom line,if you're waiting for it to happen naturally, just be patient. If you're late on your due date, you may want to ask your Dr. about induction, in which he/she might give you a drug called potosin (sp?) to help labor get started. Good luck!!

Don't drink castor oil. It can cause the baby to pass meconium before it's born and won't necessarily start labor. Try doing a lot of squats. Squats can help your cervix dilate and efface.

There are no safe ways. Anything you heard is an old wive's tale. Anything you are told to ingest could cause problems. Just wait it out. You've waited this long, you can wait a few more weeks if you have to.

My Dr. ruptured my membranes on a monday morning. I had my daughter the thursday after that. That really seemed to help. I also did alot of walking. People gave me lots of advice, the main one being sex. Sex hurt too bad, I didn't think that was good advice. Walking and the membranes thing worked for me.
